Hornsby Junction Remodelling Project

5,580m² of subgrade stabilisation within the live rail corridor at Hornsby Junction.

Client

Novo Rail Alliance

Project Scope

Site investigation, materials testing and Design Report preparation. 5,580m² insitu subgrade stabilisation in live rail corridor.

Project Date

May - October 2017

Contamination Remediation 1

Key Challenges

  • Highly urbanised location within the live rail corridor.
  • Site access was limited for deliveries of plant and additive materials requiring close coordination with the client’s team.
  • Potential problems for train driver’s visibility determined the use of hydrated lime instead of quicklime (for the lime component). To further manage this issue, spotters were utilised and spreading of binder adjacent to live rail lines was halted while trains were approaching.

Sustainable Solution

Insitu stabilising the subgrade eliminated the need to remove material (that was classified as contaminated) and replace it with 2000 tonne of imported materials. This decision made best use of the insitu materials rather than adding to landfill regulated waste.

Minimal Impact

The reduced materials haulage operations substantially reduced disruption on the heavily trafficked adjacent road networks, nearby shopping precinct and local community. Close attention to logistics management and coordination with the client ensured there were no delays to train operations.

Reduced Construction Time

The use of Hiway Group’s proposed lime and cement blend stabilisation proved to be a cost and time effective solution with significant advantages for the client. The project was completed within the client’s scheduled timeframes and to the specified quality and design requirements without impacting routine rail operations.
